A Long Tradition of Carrying

Parents have carried their babies for centuries. Today, baby carriers not only provide closeness and comfort but also spark discussions about hip health—especially the risk of hip dysplasia (improper hip development).

Ultrasound Research on Baby Carriers and Hip Positioning

A Spanish research team led by Dr. César Galo García Fontecha used ultrasound to study how different baby carriers affect babies’ hips. Fifteen healthy infants (1.5–3.5 months old) were examined while sitting in three carriers with varying thigh support, two of them from BabyBjörn.

What they found:

  • All babies showed normal hip development when carried facing inwards.

  • No differences were seen based on age, weight, or gender.

  • Carriers did not negatively affect healthy hips.

Conclusion: For babies with normal hip development, being carried inward-facing in the studied carriers is safe for their hips.
