Easy to clean
The BABYBJÖRN Plate and Spoon are dishwasher-safe but can also be washed by hand. You may warm baby’s food on the plate in the microwave oven.
Material
The BABYBJÖRN Plate and Spoon are made of polypropylene (PP) and thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). The inner plate is made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS).
The plastic is certified safe for foods and complies with the safety standards for plastics both in Europe (EEC) and the USA (FDA). This product is PVC-free and contains no bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, cadmium, lead, bromine or chlorine. Moreover, the plastic is recyclable.
Product Care
The BABYBJÖRN Plate and Spoon can be used in a microwave oven at low heat, max 90°C. Warming at low heat extends the plate’s life. We recommend only warming the food in the microwave, not preparing or cooking it there. The BABYBJÖRN Plate and Spoon are easy to clean and dishwasher-safe. However, avoid placing them near the dishwasher’s heating coil.

We need a plate and a spoon!
Most plates and cutlery are made for people who don’t feel the need to use them to test the laws of gravity. They are made for people who don’t wonder what a plate full of porridge sounds like when it hits the floor. Children have a slightly different take on things. So when we decided to develop a plate and spoon, we were eager to find out what our customers really needed.
We studied children while they ate, and noted that:
- children often grip the spoon at the far end of the handle
- children switch between their left and right hands up until about the age of three, so a good spoon has to work in either hand
- round plates and bowls make it hard to scoop up food onto the spoon; on the other hand, they’re easy to slide around on the table, to turn upside down or throw onto the floor.
So what did we do?
As always, it was important for us to focus on user-friendliness. We developed the spoon first. We gave it a handle that is thicker at the end, making it easier to hold. We added a notch on the bottom, to keep it from slipping down into the bowl.
We put a rubber ring on the base of the bowl to prevent it from sliding around. We made the plate a three-leaf clover shape with corners on the inside and edges that slope slightly inwards. This makes it easier to scoop up food onto the spoon. The outer rim of the plate was given a slant, so that it would be harder for the child to grip, turn over or throw away.
Done!
The entire process from idea to product took four years. Both items underwent countless rigorous tests by families with small children and test institutes. And we manufactured them out of a food-safe plastic that is also dishwasher and microwave-safe. The result is the BABYBJÖRN Plate and Spoon, which makes it easy for children to eat by themselves.
