  • Questions & Answers

  • When can I start using the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Original?

You can use the baby carrier from newborn, as long as your baby weighs at least 8 lbs/3.5 kg. Always use the leg straps when your baby weighs between 8-10 lbs/3.5-4.5 kg.

  • How long can I carry my child in the baby carrier each time?

You can carry your child in the baby carrier for as long as he/she is content there. However, small children should not be motionless in the same position for long periods of time. That's why we recommend that you always pay close attention to your child’s needs and switch between the baby carrier and, for example, a baby sitter, stroller or crib.

  • When can I start carrying my child facing forward in the baby carrier?

After consulting the pediatricians we work with, we recommend that you carry your baby facing you in the baby carrier until the age of 4 to 6 months, by which time the baby will have sufficient control over their head and body muscles. And it's fine to continue carrying your baby facing you if you and your baby prefer it.

  • Is it OK for my child to sleep in the baby carrier?

Yes! It’s fine for your child to sleep in a BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier. In the baby carrier, your child gets the closeness and warmth he/she needs to fall asleep feeling safe.

BABYBJÖRN Baby Carriers provide good support for the child’s back and neck, so you can carry your sleeping child for as long as he/she is satisfied. However, small children should not remain in the same position for extended periods.

That’s why we recommend that you always pay close attention to your child’s needs and switch between the baby carrier and, for example, a baby sitter, stroller or crib.

Since the baby carrier’s front piece is completely detachable, you can easily put your sleeping child down without waking him or her.

  • What should I keep in mind while adjusting Baby Carrier Original?

To ensure maximum comfort for both baby and the person carrying him/her, keep these helpful hints in mind:

    1. Begin by adjusting the baby carrier according to the baby's length. Follow the size instructions on the inside of the baby carrier and use the sliding double buckle to adjust the baby carrier.

    2. Put on the harness and snap it onto the front of the baby carrier by locking the double buckle. It is securely locked in place when you hear separate clicks from the left and right side of the double buckle.

    3. You can choose how high up you carry your baby, depending on how high you place the double buckle. You should carry your baby high enough to be able to kiss the top of their head.

    4. Adjust the baby carrier's shoulder straps to fit the size of your body. The baby carrier's back cross should be level with the lower part of your shoulder blades for maximum carrying comfort.

  • What material is the Baby Carrier Original used of?

The Baby Carrier Original is available in three fabric collections: cotton, mesh and organic cotton.

The fabric in the Cotton Collection consists of 100% cotton.

The fabric in the Organic Collection consists of 100% organically grown cotton.

The fabric in the Mesh Collection consists of 100% polyester. It's a breathable mesh fabric that carries heat and moisture away from you and your baby.

The textiles are tested and approved in accordance with Oeko-Tex Standard 100, class 1 for baby products. They are guaranteed harmless to children’s sensitive skin and will not trigger allergies.

  • How do I wash my BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Original?

You should wash the baby carrier separately at 104°F/40°C. We recommend using a mild, bleach-free and perfume-free detergent. It's a good idea to use a washing bag when you wash the baby carrier. Do not tumble dry.

  • Is it safe for my child to suck and chew on the baby carrier?

Yes, and your baby is bound to do this! The fabrics are tested and approved in accordance with Oeko-Tex Standard 100, class 1 for baby products, the class for very young children with the most rigorous requirements. This label is a guarantee that all the fabrics are free from harmful and allergenic substances.

A lot of babies suck and drool on the baby carrier when they are carried facing forward. So you won't have to wash the baby carrier too often, it's a good idea to use the practical Bib, which is also certified in accordance with Oeko-Tex Standard 100, class 1.

  • Is the position of my baby's hips, legs, and back anatomically correct in the Baby Carrier Original?

Yes, the baby's hips, legs and back are in the same position as when you hold the baby in your arms. According to pediatricians, an upright position that provides ease of breathing, freedom of movement for legs and arms, as well as ample support for the baby's neck and head is the optimal position for a newborn baby. Baby Carrier Original meets all these essential orthopedic requirements for small babies.

  • Can my baby become overstimulated while facing forward in a baby carrier?

Wanting to see what's going on and trying to turn around to see more is a natural phase in a baby's development at the age of 4 to 6 months. Baby Carrier Original allows you to carry your baby facing forward. According to child psychologists and pediatricians, the idea that a baby who has reached this phase could get overstimulated when carried facing forward is not reasonable. On the contrary, experts agree that discovering new things with one's back resting closely against Mom or Dad gives the baby a sense of safety and pleasure.

A child who has had enough will fall asleep, get upset or agitated. Your baby will let you know if he or she is tired or cranky. In that case, all you need to do is simply lift your child out of the baby carrier into the crib or baby carriage.

PLEASE NOTE! During your baby's first months, you should not carry your child facing forward at all, as the baby's neck muscles are not sufficiently developed to support the baby's head.

  • My baby has colic – can I carry her or him in the Baby Carrier Original?

Yes, carrying your baby upright in a baby carrier such as Baby Carrier Original can help alleviate colic and temporary stomach problems. Being carried and feeling the closeness of Mom or Dad may also have a soothing effect on your baby.

  • Can I nurse my baby in the Baby Carrier Original?

Yes, it's possible. Without undoing any buckles, simply let one of the shoulder straps slide off your shoulder. You might need to loosen the straps slightly, so that your baby can lean to one side. We recommend that you always sit down when nursing with a baby carrier.

  • Could being carried in a BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier damage my baby's genitals?

No, the design (correct support for neck, head and back) of all our baby carriers means that most of the baby's weight is distributed over the harness, as well as the head and neck support, rather than the seat area. The baby's center of gravity and physical proportions are different than an adult's. The baby's head is much larger in proportion to his or her body than an adult's. This explains why the baby's weight is distributed differently in the baby carrier.

This means there can be no comparison with the way you would feel sitting in a baby carrier. The baby's low body weight is also a crucial factor in ensuring that virtually no pressure is exerted on a young baby's genitals. This has been confirmed by tests carried out in collaboration with pediatricians.

  • I have a baby carrier called BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier Air but can't find it in your product range anymore. Don't you sell it any longer?

Yes, we do, but Baby Carrier Air has changed its name to Baby Carrier Original.
