Inspired by the idea of closeness
The concept that newborn babies need physical contact and enjoy being close to their parents and being carried by them is now a given. In the beginning of the 1970s, medical experts concluded how important eye contact and physical closeness between babies and their parents is, especially during the first six months of life.
Björn Jakobson had developed the bouncer and started the company BabyBjörn AB in the 60s. He was inspired by the new research on the importance of closeness and therefore began to develop a baby carrier in collaboration with pediatricians. A baby carrier should promote closeness and the bond between parents and their newborns, while functioning as a practical everyday aid. BabyBjörn launched its first baby carrier, "Hjärtenära" (Close to heart), in 1973.
